Benue State Police Arrest Suspects Linked to Yelwata Attack
The Benue State Police Command has announced the arrest of suspects linked to the recent attack on Yelwata community, which resulted in several deaths and displacement of thousands of people.
According to Commissioner of Police Emenari Ifeanyi, the arrests were made possible through collaborative efforts with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration. Additional security personnel from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, have been deployed to rural communities to enhance policing.
The police commissioner urged landlords and hotel owners to profile their tenants and clients to prevent the presence of terrorists in Benue.
The attack on Yelwata community was carried out by gunmen suspected to be herders, prompting President Bola Tinubu to direct the security forces to apprehend those responsible. During his visit to Benue, Tinubu emphasized the need for tangible intelligence to prevent future occurrences and urged the security agencies to be proactive in addressing the security challenges.
Tinubu had charged the security chiefs and the Inspector General of Police to arrest those behind the attack, saying, “Let’s get those criminals, let’s get them out.” He also directed the DG NIA and DG SSS to retool their information channels to prevent similar incidents in the future.
