The Federal Government Has Declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, A Public Holiday To Honor The Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari, Who Passed Away On Sunday.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, following approval from President Bola Tinubu. This public holiday is part of the ongoing seven-day national mourning period declared by the President to pay tribute to Buhari’s life and legacy.
Buhari, 82, passed away at a London clinic, with his death confirmed in a statement by his former special adviser, Garba Shehu, on Sunday evening.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Tunji-Ojo praised Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with unwavering dedication and integrity. He explained that the public holiday offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on Buhari’s invaluable contributions to the country’s democratic progress and overall national development.
The statement read in part:
“In continuation of the seven-day national mourning period declared by President Bola Tinubu, the Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honor of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. This day serves as a mark of respect for his dedicated service to the nation, his significant role in Nigeria’s democratic journey, and his enduring impact on governance and national development.”
Dr. Tunji-Ojo further emphasized that the holiday is an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on Buhari’s leadership, his commitment to the unity and progress of the nation, and the values he held dear.
He urged citizens to use the day to honor the late President’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national unity, reflecting his vision of a prosperous, united Nigeria.
As previously announced, national flags are to be flown at half-mast for the duration of the seven-day mourning period, starting from Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul.
