The Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state over suspected cases of diphtheria.
The directive takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026, and will remain in force until further notice.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni, on Saturday, the government said the measure was aimed at preventing further spread of the infection and protecting school children and staff.
The suspected cases have been reported in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
The government directed schools that had already resumed academic activities to also shut down from Monday.
It urged proprietors, administrators and teachers to comply with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remain safely at home throughout the period.
Parents and guardians were equally advised to cooperate with the authorities and prioritise the safety and wellbeing of their children.
The government said the decision was a precautionary measure as relevant authorities continue to take steps to contain the suspected outbreak.
It assured residents that further information on when schools would resume academic activities would be communicated to the public.
The government appealed to all stakeholders to remain calm and cooperate with ongoing measures aimed at protecting the health of residents across the state.
