Former Plateau State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kachollom Pyam Gang, has handed over the ministry to the newly appointed Commissioner, Prof. Gloria Samuel Karuri, following the recent cabinet reshuffle by Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
The handover ceremony, held at the J.D. Gomwalk Secretariat in Jos, marks Prof. Karuri’s assumption of responsibility for the Education Ministry, while Gang moves to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction.
Speaking during the handover, Gang highlighted key achievements recorded in the state’s education sector during her three-year tenure as commissioner.
She said the sector faced challenges including poor infrastructure, programme accreditation gaps and recurrent industrial strikes when the administration assumed office.
“Whatever success we have recorded during my tenure was made possible by the unwavering commitment of His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang. Governor Mutfwang views education as the bedrock of Plateau State’s development.”
Gang said the government secured accreditation for several programmes across tertiary institutions and sponsored 190 Plateau students on full international scholarships to Sanskaran University in India.
She also cited improved infrastructure through UBEC funding, intervention in community secondary schools and sustained payment of salaries as major achievements that restored stability to the sector.
“By prioritizing prompt, regular salary payments across all levels, we brought total stability to the sector, completely eliminating the frequent strike actions that once crippled our schools.”
The outgoing commissioner urged Karuri to prioritise equitable teacher distribution, rural posting incentives and ongoing projects, including the HOPE programme, while assuring her of support for a smooth transition.
Receiving the handover documents, Karuri appreciated Gang and the ministry’s staff, describing her appointment as an opportunity to build on the work already accomplished.
“Today is the time for continuation of work. I will take it up and increase the focus. Together, we will be able to work it out and, by the grace of God, ensure that our goals are achieved.”
Karuri called for teamwork and commitment among staff, stressing that collective efforts were necessary to further improve education across Plateau State.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Sadiya Ibrahim, described the occasion as joyous but emotional, as the ministry bade farewell to Gang and welcomed Karuri.
Ibrahim commended Gang for her service and the bond she built with staff, describing her as a mentor and mother. She assured Karuri of the ministry’s loyalty and support in her new role.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Amuna Samuel Amuna; Director of Schools, Mrs. Keithleen Davou Nyango; and Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Scholarship Board, Mrs. Nankus Ngwalang.
