The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Thursday reported a “minor” fire outbreak at the Idu Train Station in Abuja, caused by an electrical fault.

A statement by the corporation’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, noted that the minor fire incident occurred in the station’s low-voltage electrical room on Wednesday evening.

He said the fire was discovered at about 8:30 pm and was promptly brought under control by maintenance personnel.

A preliminary inspection showed that some electrical supply cables connected to the control panels were damaged but the alternative (solar) power system was not affected. Power has also been temporarily restored to the lifts and escalators, with 28 out of 29 currently operational.

According to the NRC, the incident does not affect Abuja–Kaduna Train Service operations, adding that scheduled train services will continue as normal.

It added that the technical team is conducting a further assessment to determine the cause of the fault and permanently restore the affected installations.
